The proposal to create a European year devoted to cultural heritage came from the European Commission, whose work includes bolstering and supplementing the actions of the Member States to preserve and promote European cultural heritage. This type of initiative enables activities to be organised and resources earmarked to highlight the important economic and identity role of European cultural heritage. In the proposal document
the Commission refers to the CulturalBase project, implemented by a consortium of several European partners including Interarts, as one of the resources where relevant information can be found on European cultural heritage. The CulturalBase project is funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation and seeks to identify and analyse some of the main topics in European identities and heritage.
